honey bees with pollen

A Beekeeping Adventure

We are just over our 2 year mark with our adventure in beekeeping. This year has been a very rewarding year as we continue to learn about bees and grow our hives. This year we bought 2 nucs, which includes a 5 frame of bees with honey, brood (babies), and a queen. We also rescued a few other hives and have even managed to split a hive. Right now we are at a grand total of 9 beehives, but some are young and will hopefully continue to thrive. Here is a view of one of our new queens this year!

Can you spot the queen bee??

One thing we discovered that the bees love this year was corn pollen. That’s right we had a nice little plot of corn with 2 ears of corn growing and the silk shining and then the next think you know, the bees are all over it. Which is a good thing right? It is until they literally stripped all the pollen off the plants and left none for the corn. We didn’t get a single ear of corn! Oh well, at least our bees were happy and full! We joke that we now have corn fed bees…

Texas Corn Fed Bees

We were able to pull honey off 3 of our hives, for a total of 68 pounds! It is very exciting to have such a sweet reward for the hard work that goes into it. There is nothing like being in bee suit in the 100 degree Texas weather. The honey is once again light colored and very sweet. This is probably because we had another wonderful season of wildflowers and a nice large patch of basket flowers, which have a light fragrance and the bees love them. If you are in the Georgetown, TX area and would like to buy some of our honey shop our store or contact us for more details!! We can only provide local pickup/delivery at this time and we make regular stops in the area.
