Then the Rain Came

After four days of working in the vineyards, meandering along snipping off green grapes, the rain came. New Zealand is known for it’s green hills and pristine rivers, which of course means it rains alot. However this summer this country has been in a drought which might just end this week. The forecast is predicting about 10 days of rain, which means no work in the vineyards. This is actually the downtime right now in between harvesting and pruning, so the lack of work is expected and the rain just encourages it. This little sleepy town now has vineyard workers aimlessly wondering down the streets contemplating how to spend their hard earned money. For Tony and I this means still eating Ramen noodles, showering at the rec center, and sleeping in our van. Although we would both love to go hiking and backpacking in the woods, even in the rain, the rivers rise and flood in NZ at an alarming rate and decided that we might just sit this week out. The place we are camping has some caves nearby which we decided to peak into with our headlamps attached. Tony was cautiously making his way into the darkness when he was startled by a little blue penguin right in front of him. He was a cute little penguin, but I don’t think he really wanted us in his cave. We are still throwing applications left and right to any options we can find, however that is very limited. One thing is for sure, when it rains all day, you are low on cash, and gas is to expensive to go anywhere, there is not much else to do but sit and look at each other. Luckily for Tony he can fish all day instead of just staring at me while I read. It is a good thing we went fishing for a bit yesterday and we each caught our first Kahawia from the Pacific Ocean. The fish is currently marinating in the cooler with brown sugar and will be thrown on the smoker for dinner. I guess life in the van will do for now, but I am not giving up hope on my own indoor plumbing just yet! Also you can now subscribe by email on the right side of the page, add a comment by clicking on “comment” below a post, and I finally added some new pics primarily from the iPhone to our “photo” section in the header. Thanks to everyone who has been reading and following our bizarre travels!
